Spiders

Spiders have two body parts - a head and an abdomen.

The diving bell spider lives its life underwater, and breathes by making a bubble full of air at the surface, then living inside it!

A given weight of spider silk is around five times as strong as the same weight of steel.

Tarantulas can survive for two years without food.

Most spiders have either six or eight eyes.

They also have fangs, which they use to bite their prey, injecting venom into it.

Spiders eat many harmful insects in your garden, and are actually great at keeping it free of pests!

Spiders are usually very short sighted, so use the hairs on their body to detect movement in the area.

The tip of a spider’s abdomen is home to glands known as spinnerets - from where the spiders make their silk. However, not all spiders spin webs.

Many species of spider roll their old web up into a ball, eat it and spin a new web every day.
